liver of a pig showing a portal area. This term refers to that part of a septum
(Se) in which are located branches of the portal
vein (PV), hepatic artery (HA) and the
bile duct (BD). On either side of the septum are rows (cords) of hepatocytes
(He), characterized by circular nuclei and separated by hepatic
sinusoids (Si). The large spaces around and within the septum are
shrinkage artifacts (*).
