Adrenal gland (20x objective lens)

This medium magnification mosaic image shows the cortex and medulla of the adrenal gland. The gland is covered by a thick connective tissue capsule (C), stained blue by aniline blue. Beneath the capsule the adrenal cortex is subdivided into three morphologically distinct regions: the zona glomerulosa (ZG); the zona fasiculata (ZF); and the zona reticularis (ZR). The groups of secretory cells are separated by capillaries which carry away the hormones secreted by the cortical cells. In this region of the gland the adrenal medulla is separated from the cortex by a large vein. The cells of the adrenal medulla (chromafin cells) are irregularly arranged and closely associated with capillaries. CLICK ON THE LABEL TO GO TO A HIGHER MAGNIFICATION IMAGE OF THAT REGION.
