Woven bone (40x objective lens) - tendon insert

This enlarged image shows the boundary between lamellar bone matrix (to the upper right) and woven bone matrix (to the lower left). The lacunae of the woven bone are in no particular pattern, whereas those in the lamellar bone are in files. The matrix of woven bone has an irregular pattern, whereas that of lamellar bone has a lamellar substructure. The large bundles of collagen fibers seen in the bone matrix are continuous with the collagen fibers of the tendon and help to anchor the tendon firmly into the bone

Stain = H&E.
